We are a recently established Benedictine Community in Egypt known as St. Benedict of the Copts; a monastery of the Benedictine Congregation of Sankt Ottilien, established in the Coptic Catholic Patriarchate of Alexandria with houses in Cairo, Ismailia and Asyut. The house in Mokattam, Cairo is named after St. Benedict, the one in Ismailia after St. Anthony and the recently established community in Asyut is named after St. Pachomius. At the moment the community depends on the Council of the Congregation and the Abbot President is its Major Superior. It is governed by the Constitutions of the Benedictine Congregation of Sankt Ottilien and by special statues.
The Holy See i.e. the Vatican approved our Egyptian foundation and the relevant decree came out on 15th of November 2017. Abbot President Jeremias OSB signed and sealed the canonical establishment of the “Monastery of St Benedict of the Copts” on 8th December 2017, the Solemnity of Immaculate Conception.
The solemn inauguration took place on 9th of March 2018 and was presided over by His Beatitude, Patriarch Ibrahim Isaaq, the patriarch of the Coptic Catholic Patriarchate of Alexandria and the President of the Catholic Church in Egypt.
Our Community maintains a special relationship with the Prince of Peace,Tigoni Abbey in Kenya to whom the formation of the brothers is entrusted at this time. Munsterschwarzach Abbey in Germany accompanies our growth closely, both spiritually and through sponsorship and the Abbot is involved in making major decisions.
Our important feasts are, 21st of March – Solemnity of St. Benedict and 13th of December – Solemnity of St. Odilia.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column_inner]
