The history of the Benedictines in Egypt is a fascinating journey through the centuries. It’s marked by spiritual depth and cultural significance. As early as the 3rd century AD, believers, including Saint Anthony the Great, withdrew to Egypt’s remote deserts for asceticism and prayer. These hermits laid the foundation for Christian monasticism, later shaped by Saint Benedict’s Rule. Since 2018, Benedictines from Saint Ottilien have continued this tradition in Egypt. They aim to implant Christian monasticism, as articulated by Saint Benedict, into the Coptic Catholic Church. In solidarity with Christian monasticism’s beginnings and Saint Anthony, our monastery is named “Saint Anthony the Great.”
The Congregation of Saint Ottilien, established in 1884, has a rich history deeply rooted in Benedictine spirituality. Originating in Germany, it was founded with a mission to revitalize monastic life. Over the years, the congregation has expanded globally, engaging in education, Medical and social services.
